While Thom and his family were visiting Carmel in June of 1998, he painted three plein air scenes. This is one of the three. The others are Rainy Day in Carmel and Carmel Mission. Point Lobos is a reserve 3 miles south of Carmel, California on the famous Highway 1. It is part of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (the largest in the U.S.). It is home to over 250 different wildlife and 350 different plants. Visitors to this beautiful scenic state reserve love to sightsee, photograph, study nature, picnic, SCUBA, jog, walk, hike, and of course paint this area. No wonder Thom and other artists are drawn to Point Lobos.
If you're ever driving along California's Central Coast, be sure to
stop at Point Lobos—a California State Reserve. This place of rare
beauty is a supreme symbol for the wondrous Monterey Bay Marine
Sanctuary, and the perfect spot to absorb the beauty of nature.
